Taking pictures complemented his love of the outdoors plus gave him the ability to share it with others. Winner of several local contests, the photographer often displays his work in local homes and businesses. “Arkansas is a beautiful state. I am hoping to share that special feeling I get when I see these works of art in nature. So many of us don’t realize the beauty that lies outside our own front door. Contact: 479-784-ARTS www.fortsmithartcenter.org

  • Showcases paintings by Julie Mayser and face sculptures by Ingrid Gipson. During the same month an exhibition of paintings by Velida Palmer will be in the Tilles Gallery. Julie Mayser was impressed early in life with Impressionist paintings. Her work may be seen in galleries in Fort Smith, Rogers and Bentonville, as well as in special exhibits. Julie often uses the landscape she’s painting to partially reflect a place in time, but also to portray the essence of the location. Her paintings salute the peaceful landscapes of rural environments. Through the use of vibrant color and selective amplification and interpretation, each of her works celebrates the gifts we are all given within the beauty of nature. Ingrid Gipson was born in Germany and currently lives in southeastern Oklahoma where she chose clay as her medium for its wonderful property to be worked by hand into three-dimensional form. She insists that all her work be original and created without any molds whatsoever. She states “I perceive myself as a storyteller, one that might through my work, inspire others to walk a path of discovery with me; to be enchanted by the discovery of the many unexpected role models in religion and mythology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy as well as art.” Velida Palmer travels extensively to collect images for her paintings and her subjects are as diverse as her destinations. In addition to her landscapes, Velida paints florals and still lifes, using objects both familiar to most and one of a kind collectibles. Having taught and conducted workshops in oil, watercolor and pen and ink, she enjoys demonstrating her methods of painting at meetings of various groups and her works are in numerous corporate and personal collections. The Fort Smith Art Center Photo Alliance will be represented by Ray Wallace and Christian Martin. Ray Wallace started taking photographs in 1967 when his parents bought him an old Polaroid Land camera in Ireland. Six years ago he decided to concentrate on landscapes and natural photography with a distinct socio-political perspective. The photographs for the September exhibit are all from Ireland where he was able to capture the raw, historic beauty of the divided island.

Location: Fort Smith Museum of History

  • This popular and award-winning trolley ride departs the Fort Smith Museum of History each Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October. Fort Smith, Arkansas, home of the "Hanging Judge," Isaac C. Parker, was once known as "Hell on the Border." This rough, rowdy border town was the jumping off place into Indian Territory for outlaws, bandits and renegades. As the trolley winds its way through the Belle Grove Historic District, riders thrill to gruesome historic facts and eerie local legends. The tour guide points out real haunted houses, revealing their secrets, along with the story of a bloody love triangle. During its checkered past, prostitution was legal in Fort Smith. The first bordello to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places now serves as the Fort Smith Visitor Center. Blythe spirits and a variety of characters from the past keep tour-goers entertained for the one-hour ride, which regales stories from the National Historic Site, Miss Laura's Visitor's Center and the Clayton House, all located within downtown and the Belle Grove Historic District. The narrative is as colorful as Fort Smith's history. All proceeds benefit the Fort Smith Museum of History.
